I Tried Augmented Reality for a Week—And It Changed How I See the World

Let me start with a confession: I always thought Augmented Reality (AR) was just a fancy tech gimmick. Cool for games, maybe useful for a Snapchat filter or two. But definitely not something that would become part of my real, everyday life.

That all changed last month, when I decided to immerse myself in AR for a week. No half-measures. I tried apps, tested wearables, played AR games, and even used it for furniture shopping and learning new skills.

What I discovered was nothing short of revolutionary.

🛋️ Day 1: "Trying on Furniture" in My Empty Living Room

I had just moved into a new apartment—exciting, but the space was a blank slate. I needed a new couch but had no clue what size or style would look good. Enter IKEA Place, an app that uses AR to let you place 3D models of furniture in your room using just your phone’s camera.

I tapped to place a beige L-shaped sofa on my floor, and there it was—virtually real, sized perfectly, and lighting matched to the room. I could walk around it, peek behind it, even rotate it.

For the first time, I wasn’t imagining how furniture might look. I was seeing it right there.

That night, I ordered the exact sofa. Spoiler: It fits perfectly.

👓 Day 2-3: Living with AR Glasses (and Feeling Like Tony Stark)

The next step in my AR journey was something I had always been skeptical about: AR glasses. I got to try a pair of Nreal Air glasses at a local demo event. Once I put them on, I was in another world—except I wasn’t.

My real-world vision was intact, but layered on top were floating screens: one showing YouTube, another with my emails, a third showing Google Maps directions.

I walked down the hall and didn’t miss a step. I checked my notifications while grabbing a coffee. I didn’t even notice how naturally I started relying on them for everyday tasks.

This was no longer futuristic tech—it was practical.

🎮 Day 4: Pokémon GO and the Return of Childlike Wonder

Remember Pokémon GO? I never really got into it when it exploded back in 2016, but this time I gave it a real shot—and wow, what a way to reconnect with the world around you.

I walked through my neighborhood and suddenly noticed small details I usually ignore. Local landmarks became gyms. Parks turned into battle zones. My regular walk turned into an adventure.

It reminded me that AR isn’t just about utility—it’s also about joy.

📚 Day 5: Learning Through AR – A Heartbeat on My Desk

One of the most surprising moments came from an educational app called Merge EDU. It works with a cube and your phone, letting you explore objects in 3D—planets, animals, historical artifacts, even human organs.

I projected a beating human heart onto my desk and used gestures to explore its chambers. I then showed it to my cousin’s 10-year-old son, and he was hooked. “This is way cooler than textbooks,” he said.

He was right. Learning with AR is learning with curiosity.

🛒 Day 6: AR in E-commerce—Virtual Try-Ons Are a Game Changer

I tested out Lenskart’s AR try-on for eyeglasses and Nykaa’s virtual makeup mirror. Here’s the kicker—I didn’t end up buying anything that day, but I spent over an hour virtually trying on dozens of styles and shades.

It was addictive. No awkward selfies. No returning things later. Just instant previews.

For brands, AR isn’t just a gimmick—it builds trust. And for users? It builds confidence.

🧠 Final Thoughts: What I Learned from My AR Week

After spending a week with AR, here’s what really stuck with me:

  • AR makes abstract ideas tangible. Whether it’s furniture, education, or design, you can see and interact with concepts before committing.

  • It enhances real life without replacing it. Unlike VR, which removes you from your environment, AR makes the real world richer.

  • AR is the future—but it’s also already here. You don’t need expensive gear. A smartphone is enough to unlock the magic.

I started the week a skeptic. I ended it a believer.

Not in hype or buzzwords—but in a future where digital and physical realities work together. A future where we interact, learn, shop, and create through the lens of Augmented Reality.

💬 What about you?
